Skyramp for VS Code: AI Test Generation Inside Your Editor

Skyramp's VS Code extension brings AI-powered, deterministic test generation directly into the editor where developers write code. Rather than switching between the IDE and a separate testing tool, developers can generate integration, contract, smoke, tests, UI, and end-to-end test within the VS Code command palette or sidebar. Tests are generated deterministically from the codebase context and any API specs present in the workspace. The extension connects to Skyramp's local-first architecture, meaning test generation happens without sending code to external servers.

Installing Skyramp in VS Code takes just a few steps. Open the VS Code Extensions marketplace by clicking the Extensions icon in the sidebar or pressing Cmd+Shift+X (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+X (Windows/Linux). Search for "Skyramp" in the marketplace search bar. Click the Install button on the Skyramp extension. Once installed, the extension integrates with VS Code's command palette and sidebar. The extension uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to communicate with Skyramp's test generation tools. No additional cloud setup is required.

The in-editor workflow is designed for speed and context awareness. To generate tests, open the VS Code command palette (Cmd+Shift+P or Ctrl+Shift+P) and type "Skyramp" to see available commands. The extension reads context from your workspace automatically: open API specification files (OpenAPI, Swagger), endpoint definitions in your code, code context, and existing test files. When you invoke a test generation command, you specify which endpoint or scenario to target and which test type to generate. The extension outputs a complete, executable test file directly into your project directory, following your project's existing test file structure and naming conventions. Generated tests include realistic request data, response validation, and integration with your existing test framework (Playwright, Pytest, JUnit, etc.).

Skyramp's local-first architecture means test generation runs on the developer's machine, not on Skyramp's servers. No source code leaves the development environment. This is a meaningful differentiator from cloud-dependent AI coding tools and a critical consideration for developers working on proprietary or security-sensitive codebases. The extension processes API specifications and generates tests entirely locally. For teams subject to compliance requirements or working in air-gapped environments, local-first test generation ensures that testing capabilities remain available without exposing code to third-party services. Deterministic generation guarantees that the same inputs always produce identical test output, making generated tests version-control safe.
